Sacrament of Reconciliation

The Sacrament of Reconciliation, also known as Confession or Penance, is a beautiful gift through which we encounter the infinite mercy and forgiveness of God. Through this sacrament, those who have sinned after Baptism are reconciled with God and the Church, receiving the grace to begin anew.

Jesus entrusted the ministry of forgiveness to His Apostles when He said, “Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” (John 20:23)

In the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we confess our sins to a priest, express sincere sorrow, receive absolution, and are given a penance to help strengthen our relationship with God. No sin is too great for God’s mercy when we come to Him with a repentant heart.

Children preparing to receive their First Reconciliation participate in our Faith Formation program, where they learn about God’s love, the meaning of sin and forgiveness, and how to make a good confession. Families are encouraged to pray together and participate regularly in the celebration of Mass.

Adults who have been away from the Church or who wish to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation after many years are always welcome. Our priest is available to offer guidance, encouragement, and the compassionate mercy of Christ.

Before celebrating the sacrament, Catholics are encouraged to:

  • Pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
  • Examine their conscience.
  • Confess all mortal sins in kind and number to the best of their ability.
  • Express sincere sorrow and a firm purpose of amendment.
  • Complete the penance given by the priest.

Confession is held every Saturday, from 3:00-3:30 PM at St. Thomas Church. Confessions may also be arranged by appointment by contacting the parish office.

Whether it has been weeks, years, or even decades since your last confession, you are always welcome. Christ is waiting with open arms to offer His mercy, peace and healing.
