The Knights of Columbus Atlantic Council 18 has a long and distinguished history of faith, charity and service in Thomaston. Established in 1885 by Blessed Michael J. McGivney while he was pastor of St. Thomas Church, Council 18 is one of the oldest Knights of Columbus councils in the world. For well over a century, its members have faithfully served the Church, supported families, and strengthened the local community.
Guided by the principals of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism, the Knights of Columbus provide opportunities for Catholic men to grow in their faith while putting that faith into action. Members support parish ministries, assist those in need, promote respect for life, encourage vocations, and sponsor charitable programs that benefit our parish and the wider community.
The Knights are active participants in the life of St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish. Whether helping at parish events, supporting fundraiser, assisting community outreach, fundraisers, such as the monthly Scholarship Breakfast, or lending a hand whenever needed, their dedication is a visible sign of Christian service in action.
Catholic men aged 18 and older who are practicing their faith are invited to consider becoming a Knight. Membership offers opportunities for spiritual growth, lasting friendships, leadership development, and meaningful service to both the Church and the community.

Atlantic Council 18: A Legacy of Faith and Service
The story of Atlantic Council 18 is closely connected to the remarkable ministry of Blessed Michael J. McGivney, the parish priest whose vision of faith, fraternity, and charity gave birth to the Knights of Columbus in 1882. While Blessed McGivney served as pastor of St. Thomas Church early in his priesthood, the Knights of Columbus was founded in 1882 in New Haven. Atlantic Council 18 was organized during his pastorate in Thomaston and is among the oldest councils in the Order, giving it a special place in Knights of Columbus history.
In 1885, Father McGivney was assigned as pastor of St. Thomas Church in Thomaston. During his time here, he continued to nurture and expand the young Knights of Columbus, encouraging Catholic men to deepen their faith, support one another, and care for families in need. Under his leadership. Atlantic Council 18 was established on April 8, 1885, making it one of the oldest Knights of Columbus councils in the world.
Although Father McGivney’s time in Thomaston was brief, his influence on the parish and the community was profound. He inspired men to live their faith through works of charity, to strengthen family life, and to serve both the Church and their neighbors with generosity and compassion. Those same values continue to guide Atlantic Council 18 today.
The mission begun by Blessed Michael McGivney remains alive in Thomaston through the faithful service of the Knights. Council members support parish ministries, assist those in need, promote respect for the dignity of every human life, encourage vocations, and participate in charitable projects that benefit our parish and the surrounding community.
As a parish founded on this rich spiritual heritage, St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish is grateful for the enduring witness of Atlantic Council 18. The council stands as a living reminder that ordinary Catholic men, united in faith and charity, can make an extraordinary difference in the lives of others.

Prayer for the Canonization of Blessed Michael J. McGivney
God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the window and orphan,
You called your priest, Blessed Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life
And to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor.
Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow Your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely,
Fulfilling His commandment of charity and building up His Body which is the Church.
Let the inspiration of Your servant prompt us to greater confidence in Your love
So that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast.
We humbly ask that you glorify Your servant Blessed Michael J. McGivney on earth
